Whisper House Press, an outstanding small press out of Salt Lake City, Utah, recently invited me to write an essay for their retrospective film review series, “It Came from the Crypt.” The focus of the series is for horror writers to look at movies that indelibly shaped them. There are so many seminal films that formed my creativity and approach to writing horror and suspense, but no film is more central to my creative origin story than Jaws. But there is an irony to the 1975 Steven Spielberg movie. Jaws is a masterpiece of a monster movie, but it also brought about the end to one of cinema’s finest eras, the “New Hollywood” movement that began in the late 1960s.
